So, here, we are, fresh at the start of a new season of The Walking Dead. It has been six months since AMC took us on the most boring road trip ever. But, did we finally find out who Negan killed? Check out my recap of Episode 1 (entitled “The Day Will Come When You Won’t Be”) to find out!

SPOILER ALERT: I don’t normally do these, but, here’s your reminder to put your big girl panties on because I will not be like AMC and will reveal who Negan killed right away. Also, I didn’t take notes through this episode, like I normally do. This recap will likely be all over the place as a result.

The month has finally arrived! For fans of the fast-talking, highly caffeinated pop-culture nerds, the Gilmore girls, it is just a few short weeks until Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life, four Netflix Original movie-length episodes hits your TV, computer and smart phone screens. We're geeking out over here.

There are a lot of Netflix Originals arriving this month, from continuations of already running series (Lovesick [previously titled Scrotal Recall], Danger Mouse and Beat Bugs just to name a few) to season premieres (Paranoid, World of Winx, Case and plenty more, including the highly-anticipated The Crown).

HBO’s ‘Westworld,’ Season 1, Episode 3, “The Stray” Recap

21/10/2016

Picture
Welcome to my recap of HBO’s latest offering, Westworld. Here’s what I thought of Episode 3 of Season 1.

The title of this episode, “The Stray,” pertains to a random host Elsie (Shannon Woodward) and Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) have to chase down in Westworld. He has been hanging with a group that seem to have to gotten themselves into a loop and are just sitting out in the woods around a camp fire. This stray like to carve stuff, but Elsie soon discovers all of his creations seem to have the constellation, the Orion, on them. So, is this another “game within the game”or has this stray legitimately flipped it switch? After a lot of hunting, Elsie stops to take a piss and conveniently takes a leak right next to the stray, who has fallen down a crevasse. Stubbs gets down there in the crevasse and bleeds that stray out for … reasons. The stray comes back on line midway through and climbs the hell out of that hole, nearly taking out Elsie until he decides to bash his own skull in with a rock. So, Orion carvings: 0. Violent delights quote: 2. I know which glitch I would rather have.

Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) is having another “off the log” chat with Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood). This time he is getting her to read from Alice in Wonderland (which Entertainment Weekly points out, is totally Dolores get up anyway. We also learn that Bernard lost a son and Dolores is questioning him about it. Which is really cool because when Bernard questions her about why she asked about his son, she is all like, “well, that’s part of my programming.”

Except, I bet she’s lying.

Westworld Recap: Episode 2

Welcome to my recap of HBO’s latest offering, Westworld. Here’s what I thought of Episode 2 of Season 1.

Well it seems that Dolores’ (Evan Rachel Wood) may have a sneaky little glitch in Episode 2 of Westworld. A programming glitch, because a male voice commands her to wake up in the middle of the night and go outside. The result of this programming is not discovered until the very end of the episode though. However, throughout Episode 2, it seems her small anomaly might not have gone unnoticed by Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) who has a little private moment with Dolores where he questions whether she has been programmed by anyone else since the last time they spoke. What is most interesting about this encounter is not only the fact that it is clandestine (indicated by Dolores still wearing clothes) and that he then asks her to completely wipe all traces of their conversation from her activity log. Righto, so is Bernard trying to outdo Dr. Ford (Anthony Hopkins) already in the God complex department?
Speaking of Ford, he is busy dipping his own toes into the immersive aspect of Westworld. Entering, he immediately finds a small boy. After a chat and a walk, Ford sees a structure that looks like a black church and instructs the boy to leave. Once again, it is the end of the episode before we find out anything else about this building.

Westworld series premiere recap: episode 1

Welcome to my recap of HBO’s latest offering, Westworld. Here’s what I thought of Episode 1 of Season 1.

Now, this is HBO, so we have a checklist to run first though.
Gratuitous female nudity. Check.
Gratuitous violence against women. Check.
Male eye candy. Check.
Plucky female lead. Check.
That dirty feeling that doesn’t leave you even after you have finished watching. Check.
We start with just an ordinary day in Westworld. The robots — or “hosts” – are just happy to be alive and accepting the Newcomers (the paying monsters – sorry, humans). This day loops over throughout the episode just to show us how fucked up humans can be when there is a theme park with hosts that have no idea they are being raped and murdered over and over and over again. HBO clarifies this by sending in the Man in Black (Ed Harris) to literally rape and murder on repeat. He does, however, get sick of this when the robots start glitching out and he decides to find the game within the game.
But, over this continuous loop we learn some valuable information.

What's Coming & Going from Netflix in October 2016

Netflix lovers can breathe a sigh of relief; there's not too much damage this month in terms of what's leaving the service, but if you want to watch the Back to the Future films for the tenth time, or catch a bunch of 90s classics like Deep Impact, Erin Brockovich or The Truman Show, make sure you get on that now.

Strangely, only weeks after the premiere of The Exorcist TV series, the OG demonic possession movie, The Exorcist, is on its way out, and right before Halloween! If you want to catch the original before delving into some weekly demonic scares, or want to get your scare on for some Halloween thrills, then now's the time.

But more importantly, what's coming? Puh-lenty. Personal faves and additions of interest include 90s cult classic Dazed & Confused and Without a Paddle which I remember being surprisingly funny, season one of the lovably bonkers YouTuber turned Netflix-leading lady, Miranda Sings' original Netflix series, Haters Back Off and... there's a season three of The Fall? Looking forward to seeing where that could possibly take us considering what happened at the end of season two. Or did it?

As always, the full list is below. Mark your binge-watches in your calendars, dudes.

It's that time again! Netflix are about to shake up their offering, with a ton of new shows and movies dropping this month, and a ton of shows and movies hitting the highway.
Notable additions to the streaming service in September include family fave Zootopia (already!), the 2005 Amityville Horror movie (handy for those of us planning to check out 2017's Amityville: The Awakening), season 6 of The Walking Dead is landing so you can rewatch before season 7 starts up in October, plus fans of the Netflix Original Jessica Jones, mark your calendars because the wait is over! No, it's not season 2 of Jessica Jones, but the debut season of its companion show, Luke Cage, will be ready for binge-watching at the end of the month.

Among the movies and programs leaving Netflix are a couple of my all-time favourite thrillers, Double Jeopardy and Primal Fear, so if you're into thrillers and haven't seen these gems, make sure to check them out before September 1st and tell me what you think.

Now, the full list:

The Avengers & Justice League Have Some Competition. Meet Russia's 'Guardians'

To be honest, the Western world doesn't usually pay a whole lot of attention to foreign cinema with out-of-sync-looking voice dubbing or pesky subtitles (you can't browse your phone or multi-task when your eyes must be on the screen), but occasionally a film is released that looks so promising that even subtitles aren't a barrier for mainstream audiences.

I think one of those films is the upcoming 2017 Russian neo-noir superhero movie Guardians (Защитники Zaschitniki in the native tongue).

What's it About?

From director David Ayer ("Fury," "End of Watch") comes "Suicide Squad," starring Oscar nominee Will Smith ("Ali," "The Pursuit of Happyness"), Oscar winner Jared Leto ("Dallas Buyers Club"), Margot Robbie ("The Wolf of Wall Street," "Focus"), Joel Kinnaman (Netflix's "House of Cards") and Oscar nominee Viola Davis ("The Help," "Doubt"). It feels good to be bad... Assemble a team of the world's most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government's disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren't picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it's every man for himself?

Rating: PG-13 (for sequences of violence and action throughout, disturbing behavior, suggestive content and language)
Genre: Action & Adventure
Directed By: David Ayer
Written By: David Ayer
In Theaters: Aug 5, 2016  wide
Runtime: 123 minutes
Studio: Warner Bros. Pictures

It's taken me a long time to write this review, as I honestly didn't know how to unjumble all my thoughts about the film. There is just so much to say about Suicide Squad. I enjoyed it, it was a fun night out at the cinema, but it definitely had a lot of problems.

Beware spoilers below.
