Before reading Illuminae, the first book in The Illuminae Files trilogy by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff, I seized a friend and made them flip through the pages. Before even thinking about the words delivered on the page, I was sucked in by the formatting and I had to show someone else. What we were seeing was words swirling off across the page, emulating fighter jets in flight and page upon page of photos that break your heart when you learn what they mean. Personally, I loved how words were sometimes used to create pictures. But never fear there is also plenty of normal-ish text to read (though some is redacted, including all swear words − to which you’ll find yourself trying to fill in the blanks and which somehow gives the missing words more power).

Though a lot is leaving the streaming service, there's also a lot of rad new content being added. New seasons of Netflix Originals Daredevil and House of Cards are landing, plus new shows Flaked and The Characters and even a new season of Pee Wee Herman if you can believe it. Update your calendars. Here's the list: I’m going to premise the following by saying I had never seen so many crotch shots in my life than in Tim Miller’s Deadpool – though maybe that says something more about my viewing habits than it does about the latest flick in the Marvel franchise. For a movie that was so hyped, it both did and didn’t live up to the swell of interest around this atypical, gore and risqué-humour filled addition to the superhero genre. Though the kids may beg to see it, I'm not even sure I was old enough to see it.
Having never read the Deadpool graphic novels, I was going in blind, but it wasn't hard to follow as it is essentially Deadpool's origin story, background behind his odd name choice and all. There are some in-jokes for the die-hard fans (read semi-pornographic animated characters) but it didn't detract from the film for newbies, just enhanced it for the fans. First off, Ryan Reynolds seems perfectly cast. Though crasser than his normal roles (yes, I'm even talking Van Wilder and Blade: Trinity), the character perfectly fits the persona and schtick Reynolds has cultivated throughout his career. Australian Gen Xers and Ys and even Millennials are, for the most part, very aware of and very fond of author John Marsden's Tomorrow When the War Began series.
I remember reading the first book in grade five, up in the stands at a school sports day (for an artistic non-sporty kid those days were so booooorrriiinnggg) and a boy came up to me, had a look at what I was reading and told me there was sex in it. Which, spoiler alert, there is. Though not in the first book. tvtHIRTEEN rEASONS wHY
