We've all heard of guard dogs, narcotics dogs and cadaver dogs. Dogs working in law enforcement is a noble profession that some breeds are very good at. Not to mention goat "lawn mowers", guide dogs and cats and therapy dogs that visit and provide love and comfort to the elderly and ill.
But these are not the only types of jobs available to animals these days. There are a myriad of other professions our four-legged friends take part in, putting their own particular skillsets to good use.

Ball Boys - I Mean, Dogs
At an exhibition tennis match in Spain between Gastao Elias and Roberto Carballes Baena this year, the ball boys and girls were given the day off and their job was taken over by four shelter veterans and experts in the art of fetching stray tennis balls.
This is a perfect job for dogs! Why hasn't anyone thought of it sooner? If players don't mind a bit of drool on the balls and spittle flying, this could be a winner. Or a one-off awareness-raising initiative to promote the adoption of abandoned street animals. One of those.

Shop Assistant - Dog
Shiba the dog works at Shimada Cigarette Shop in Tokyo, and is all kinds of adorable when he uses his nose and paw to open a sliding glass window and greet customers or curious visitors.
Shiba has become somewhat of an internet star, but he hasn't let the fame go to his head.

Shop Assistant - Cat
|
Olly, a neighbourhood cat, has taken it upon himself to oversee operations at a Sainsbury's supermarket, in Brockley in the UK. He can be found atop the fridges, scowling at customers who step out of line, patrolling the aisles or promising discounts for head scratches.

Airport Lost and Found
Dutch airline KLM has boosted their customer service by adding a pooch to the payroll and utilising his excellent sense of smell in the lost and found team. As airline staff clean and tidy the plane at the end of disembarkation, should they find passenger belongings left behind they can quickly put dogs to the task of tracking down the item's owner before they've even left the airport. Much more convenient than dealing with insurance claims and a lost luggage department in a foreign language!
pest extermination
There are many types of animals that would make great organic pest exterminators, but they'd very well trample or eat the produce as well.
This vineyard seems to have found a winning formula, with a very large workforce of 900 ducks eager to get to work each morning.

Prison Guards?
According to The Mirror, Indonesia's drug tsar Budi Waseso plans to house drug traffickers in a prison surrounded by a moat full of crocodiles, and though ridiculed for the proposition, claims he is thinking of employing man-eating piranhas and tigers as guards as well.
Waseso is quoted as saying, "You can't bribe crocodiles. You can't convince them to let inmates escape."
He has a point.
What other unusual jobs have you seen animals take on?
