The Orange Collar and Why You Need to Know About It

Beloved four-legged family members go missing far too often, but I had no idea just how often.

When people see a dog wandering by itself, they assume it's lost and step in to get it safely home again. But when seeing a cat it's easy to assume it's just chillin' near home and will return there when it damn well wants to, which means less lost cat sightings are reported and less cats are returned home.

How are we to know that this cat Needs our help to find its way home again?

The Oatmeal is a comic page by American writer and artist, Matthew Innman. His comics are always crass, always funny and even sometimes educational. And though he's the creator of an app game called Exploding Kittens, he's actually a cat lover at heart, and has developed a simple, but ingenious way to make sure people know when they see your indoor-only cat outside, that they should step in and help it out. He explains it pretty succinctly here, but here is the gist:

Or capture it and take it back to indoor jail at home with you where it belongs. Tomay-to, tomah-to...

Seriously though, as an indoor-only cat owner/warden, I am always concerned she's going to dart outside and I'll never see her again.
So spread the word – even if you don't own a cat who needs an orange collar, knowing what it means when you see one is even more important for the return of lost feline friends.

You can buy the Kitty Convict Collar at Amazon, and can even get its name and your phone number embroidered right on the collar so that your feline overlord can come home quickly and safely.
