For nearly a decade, residents of British Columbia have been unsettled and mystified by a strange phenomenon occurring on their coastlines.
Since 2007, a dozen individual human feet have washed ashore. Decomposing feet. And still inside their running shoes. It has been nearly four years since the last foot was found, but on February 7, 2016, two more sneaker-clad feet made their way to shore.

Only eight of the twelve ‑ now fourteen ‑ feet have been identified, some were pairs, whereas others were riding the waves solo. Word from the coroner's office is that the remaining feet belonged to men.
Rumours have run rampant over the years: has there been a serial killer trawling small towns in Canada and their disposal site has been compromised? Is it part of an illegal organ harvest scheme? Are little green men responsible? Certainly most who come across this eerie mystery believe it to be the result of some form of criminal activity.
Well the mystery of what happened may have finally been solved. Coroner Barb McLintock told the National Post that they know what happened in almost all instances, and foul play was not a factor. The people missing their feet are missing them either due to accidents or suicide.

But Why Are They Washing Ashore?
McLintock was also reported as saying that it’s normal for the feet to have separated from the legs during the decomposition process. Previously, if a body was decomposing underwater, the detached feet would simply sink to the bottom of the ocean or river and have been gone forever. And feet still do sink, but the feet of those wearing modern running shoes, and are unfortunate enough to end up in a watery grave, find their feet floating to the surface instead. It's actually pretty simple as to why, too. Nowadays, running shoes are made to be lightweight, with foam-based soles or from other materials that float.
It seems the beach- and lakeside residents of British Columbia will continue to be lucky on their days at the beach, and never know when they'll get to find the lower part of a corpse.
