Welcome to my recap of HBO’s latest offering, Westworld. Here’s what I thought of Episode 3 of Season 1.
The title of this episode, “The Stray,” pertains to a random host Elsie (Shannon Woodward) and Stubbs (Luke Hemsworth) have to chase down in Westworld. He has been hanging with a group that seem to have to gotten themselves into a loop and are just sitting out in the woods around a camp fire. This stray like to carve stuff, but Elsie soon discovers all of his creations seem to have the constellation, the Orion, on them. So, is this another “game within the game”or has this stray legitimately flipped it switch? After a lot of hunting, Elsie stops to take a piss and conveniently takes a leak right next to the stray, who has fallen down a crevasse. Stubbs gets down there in the crevasse and bleeds that stray out for … reasons. The stray comes back on line midway through and climbs the hell out of that hole, nearly taking out Elsie until he decides to bash his own skull in with a rock. So, Orion carvings: 0. Violent delights quote: 2. I know which glitch I would rather have.
Bernard (Jeffrey Wright) is having another “off the log” chat with Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood). This time he is getting her to read from Alice in Wonderland (which Entertainment Weekly points out, is totally Dolores get up anyway. We also learn that Bernard lost a son and Dolores is questioning him about it. Which is really cool because when Bernard questions her about why she asked about his son, she is all like, “well, that’s part of my programming.”
Except, I bet she’s lying.

We also learn, later on in Episode 3 of Westworld, that it is totally against protocol to question hosts while they are clothed. Apparently it is because they show no shame, but, let’s face it, unless you are doing it for a perv, it would be much easier just to leave the hosts dressed. Oh, but, this is HBO, I forget, they need an easy way to fill their weekly nude quota.
Speaking of the logistics of running Westworld, Elsie discovers that the raving lunatic host who also had a milk fetish was talking to someone called Arnold during his psychotic episode. This is when we get a huge backstory dump about Dr. Ford and a guy he used to work with, Arnold. Apparently it was this guy and not Dr. Ford who was trying to bring actual consciousness to the hosts. Arnold died in Westworld according to Dr. Ford. His basic coding of the hosts stayed though. We also learn that the original hosts, programmed by Arnold heard an internal monologue, likened to a god-like deity speaking to them. Akin to what we see happening between Dolores and that voice telling her to remember. I also totally think Arnold might be the Man in Black (of whom we saw absolutely nothing of in this episode of Westworld).

Teddy (James Marsden) has gotten a much more interesting backstory since he was blown away in Episode 2 ofWestworld. Dolores has worked this out too and questions him as to why they don’t run away together at a definite time rather than his blow off time of “someday.” Teddy responds by vaguing out (as hosts do when they are asked to ponder the meaning of life). He also teaches her how to shoot a gun. Well, sort of. It seems Dolores can’t manage to pull the trigger.
When Teddy is not teaching Dolores gun tricks, he is off chasing some guy called Wyatt. Because what’s the wild west without a character called Wyatt right? Apparently this backstory will also link into the big chunk of land Dr. Ford (Anthony Hopkins) has just put aside for his latest narrative that no one knows shit about.
With Teddy getting a backstory, Dolores is left alone to deal with the outlaws who regularly attack her home. Lucky Teddy taught her how to use a gun. Weird shit happens though. Dolores starts seeing flashbacks of her previous dad when she looks at the new host playing her father. She also sees the Man in Black (Ed Harris) when she is dragged into the barn. Suddenly she knows how to use a gun and I am glad. It seems Dolores not only grew a set but is somehow accessing her previously wiped stories.
White hat William (Jimmi Simpson) finds out that even though a host cannot kill a human, the shots they fire sure as shit hurt like a bitch. Even with the pain, he manages to save a hooker host from a bad guy. He still won’t have sex with her though because he’s a nice guy, or some other sort of horseshit. He then goes on an adventure and drags Logan (Ben Barnes) along with him rather than the other way around. This little adventure ends with Dolores wandering into their camp after escaping her home and the bandits there. It seems William will now have to help a damsel in distress in Episode 4 of Westworld.
