This episode of Game of Thrones appears to be the one in which HBO reminds you of characters from seasons gone by. Can you remember all the way back to Season 1? How about the Red Wedding? Righto, better strap yourself in then

- So Meera ( Ellie Kendrick) is still dragging Bran (Isaac Hempstead Wright) through the forest. I’m not really sure where they are headed and just how far they have to go before the Night King’s (Vladimir Furdik) touch doesn’t work any more but where they are is not it. Just when it seems all hope is lost, a cloaked guy turns up and annihilates all the wights chasing them. It turns out, before the three-eyed raven (Max von Sydow) died, he sent Benjen Stark (Joseph Mawle) to help out. But who the fuck is Benjen? Bran seems to know him, that’s for sure. And that’s because he is Bran’s uncle. Remember, back in Season 1 of Game of Thrones, when Jon Snow (Kit Harington) first joined the Night’s Watch? Benjen was there to help him assimilate, but before Jon could really settle in, Benjen went missing north of the wall, presumed dead. Except we all know, thanks to the Greyjoys, that what is dead may never die and Benjen is now someone else entirely. Turns out he was saved by the children of the forest after he was attacked by white walkers. Basically, now Benjen isn’t quite human and isn’t really a wight or a white walker and I am not really sure just how HBO are going to make all this work because even after scouring the Game of Thrones wikia in an effort to work it all out, I still can’t make sense of what Benjen is. - Samwell Tarly (John Bradley-West) takes Gilly (Hannah Murray) home to meet the worst dad in Westeros. And we thought Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) had it rough with his father. Lord Tarly is something else entirely. He also has an extreme prejudice towards wildlings. So, as to be expected, Gilly’s cover is eventually blown and we get to hear Lord Tarly rant about wildings and why they suck so much. He kicks Samwell out, but says Gilly and her child can stay because he assumes the child is his grandchild. Amazing how he will be nicer to a half-wildling than he will is to his own son. Samwell leaves, taking Gilly, her child, and his father’s precious Valyrian steel sword with him.
- In King’s Landing Margaery (Natalie Dormer) is getting ready for her walk of shameatonement. King Tommen (Dean-Charles Chapman) is horrified more at the prospect of his wife walking naked and what that will mean for him than the fact his wife has taken on a decidedly religious glow. Needless to say, when Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) tries to forcibly take Margaery and Loras (Finn Jones) back, the High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce) announces King’s Landing will now be non-secular. This means Tommen may be king but he is really only a puppet to the religious zealots. Jaime and Cersei (Lena Headey) get pissy about this and plot their revenge before rubbing incestuous uglies.
- So now it is time for Arya (Maisie Williams) to poison Lady Crane (Essie Davis) but ends up chickening out and laying the blame elsewhere. This is not good for Arya. Not one little bit. Jaqen’s (Tom Wlaschiha) only request when he sends out the mean girl to kill Arya is that she doesn’t suffer.
- You know when Daenerys (Emilia Clarke) is just cruising along, wondering how she’s going to get the Dothraki to cross the sea and help her take over the seven kingdoms and you are dosing off because you really don’t care so much for military strategy? Yeah, well thank you HBO for putting a motherfucking dragon in this scene to make me wake up and take notice! It takes about three seconds after that for the Dothraki to agree to absolutely anything Daenerys says to them.
WTF Moments
- Benjen Stark appeared. Enough said. But then he goes on to suggest Bran is the only defense they have against the white walkers.
- Walder Frey (David Bradley) makes an appearance in Episode 6 of Game of Thrones. He’s pissed at the Tully’s for taking back Riverrun. Not only is it a surprise to see Walder again, it turns out he has a Tully hostage. Who it is, I have no idea beyond the name Edmure and the fact Walder seems to think this guy is a pretty terrific wild card. The whole scene seems completely random–even for Game of Thrones standards–until you realise Jaime Lannister will be sent there to sort the mess out as punishment for threatening the High Sparrow.

0 out of 5 for Tits. That’s right, in an episode where Cersei and Jaime get it on, no nudity was recorded.
3 out of 5 for Dragons. Finally we get a dragon! And not just a small sighting, an up close and personal view. Daenerys riding it was just the icing on the cake.
Season 6 of Game of Thrones returns to HBO with Episode 7, entitled “The Broken Man” on Sunday, June 5, at 9 p.m. ET.
The official synopsis according to the Independent for Episode 7 is as follows.
The High Sparrow (Jonathan Pryce) eyes another target. Jaime (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) confronts a hero. Arya (Maisie Williams) makes a plan. The North is reminded.
