Australian Gen Xers and Ys and even Millennials are, for the most part, very aware of and very fond of author John Marsden's Tomorrow When the War Began series.
I remember reading the first book in grade five, up in the stands at a school sports day (for an artistic non-sporty kid those days were so booooorrriiinnggg) and a boy came up to me, had a look at what I was reading and told me there was sex in it.
Which, spoiler alert, there is. Though not in the first book.

The first book in the young adult speculative fiction series, Tomorrow When the War Began, received the big screen blockbuster treatment in 2010. Though the number one grossing film in Australia that year, considering it's only Australia, that didn't actually say much and so the potential six sequels were left on the shelf.
As some of the film's lead actors hopped on planes and succumbed (pretty successfully, actually) to Hollywood's siren call, it became less and less likely that there would be any sequels produced. Disappointing, because for someone who always believes the book is better, and who wanted to become an author BECAUSE of this series, I really dug the movie.
But whatevs, the TV show is on its way!
Tomorrow When the War Began will start airing a six-episode season in April 2016 on ABC3 (that's Australian ABC - totally different kettle of fish to the US one).

According to IMDB, the main cast of teens is made up of mostly newcomers. While, taking on the adult roles, some familiar names and strong performers appear, including Deborah Mailman (Offspring, The Secret Life of Us) and Sybilla Bud (Winners & Losers, All Saints, The Secret Life of Us).
Fun fact: my talent agent sent an email around for extras for the show and I was SO excited until I saw the requirements: You needed to be fit and able to run a long time (haha, no), preferably of Asian heritage/appearance (alas, no), and if you had some martial arts training that would be highly considered (a hat trick of no). I guess they were casting for the invaders! Though I wasn't able to take part in the filming, I am very much looking forward to the watching, come April.
But what is Tomorrow When the War Began about?
Wikipedia describes it pretty well: The Tomorrow series is a series of seven young adult novels written by Australian writer John Marsden, detailing the invasion and occupation of Australia by a foreign power. The novels are related by Ellie Linton, a teenage girl, who is part of a small band of teenagers waging a guerrilla war on enemy soldiers in the region around their fictional home town of Wirrawee.
Are you looking forward to it as much as I am?
