With such lengthy breaks between filming and the cast and creators in such incredibly high demand, you could be forgiven for thinking that season 4 of Sherlock would never happen.
But fear no more, fellow Sherlockians and Cumberbitches! The cast and crew are back on set in London and filming season four right now.
According to the BBC, series four will begin with the detective back on home soil while Doctor Watson (Martin Freeman) and his wife Mary (Amanda Abbington) are preparing to become parents for the first time.

And it seems with Holmes occupied, Sherlock (Benedict Cumberbatch) may have found a new friend.

Not only has a floppy-eared furry friend been added to the team, but actor Toby Jones has been cast as "one of Conan Doyle's finest villains".
And there's more! In the below shots from set, we see Sherlock looking noticeably disheveled, clearly not coping without his partner in crime (solving).

We may want to savour this coming season, though, as co-creator and Executive producer Steven Moffatt has admitted to The Telegraph he’s not sure how much longer the show will run, pointing out that his leading men, now both A-list Hollywood movie stars, don’t really need the show anymore. It's not all bad news, though, he also said:
I don’t know how long we can keep it going. I’m personally willing but I’m hardly the main draw. I would be moderately surprised if this was the last time we ever made this show. But it absolutely could be.
Have hope, fandom. The season four premiere of Sherlock is expected to air sometime in January 2017. With this timing, we could have had a second Christmas special ala "The Abominable Bride" in the middle. In case you've forgotten what happened back in January's highly anticipated, audience dividing movie-length special, this tweet about sums it up:
So, to summarise the plot of tonights #Sherlock, Holmes has got off a plane and into a car.

Maybe in the "Abominable Bride Part 2" Sherlock would have moved from the car back to his arm chair in Baker Street. Spectacular.
