MOVIE REVIEW: 10 Cloverfield Lane. The Non-Sequel Movie Sequel

18/3/2016

Going into 10 Cloverfield Lane I expected the continuation of, or a story similar to, its 2008 predecessor with its handicam, found-footage and humans caught in the crossfire between aliens destroying New York City and the U.S. Army trying to stop. If you're expecting that blockbuster. If you're expecting Cloverfield, then you're going to come out either disappointed or confused.

10 Cloverfield Lane is nothing like Cloverfield. It doesn't follow typical sequel protocol, where a film takes the beats of the film before it and adds a new story with the same structure, so that the film feels different, but still familiar to the first. 10 Cloverfield Lane does none of that.

You may remember one of our very first posts mentioned the first film from the stellar series of books, Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. It was a post about upcoming TV and film adaptations we were psyched for, and Miss Peregrine was absolutely one of them.

And finally it has a trailer!

Ariana Grande's New Song "Dangerous Woman" Just Released and We Have Thoughts and Feels

I'm gonna be real here. I'm not a huge fan of Ariana Grande. Her songs are catchy, don't get me wrong, but the lyrics can be a bit cray (you KNOW I'm talking about 'wanting to die alive' in Break Free) and I just wish she would enunciate her words a bit more clearly; it brings out some deep, dark, unexplained irritation in me. Grinds my gears, it does.

But Ariana has released the audio video for her new single, Dangerous Woman on her VEVO account, and I'm gonna admit. I'm digging it. It's moody and sultry and a more mature sound for Ariana, a track that would work well on a James Bond soundtrack.

Have a listen below. What do you think of the track? It's also available on Spotify so if you like it, go forth and add it to your fave playlist and stream it as often as you like!

2016 Eurovision Song Contest: What We Know So Far

9/3/2016

We're only mere months away from the 2016 Eurovision Song Contest and I'm not gonna lie, I'm getting excited. I held a Eurovision Grand Final viewing party last year with a bunch of Eurovision virgins and it was a smashing success. We voted online, live tweeted with the rest of Australia, waved our thumbs up or thumbs down paddles in each other's faces, depending on how we felt about each act, played the official SBS Eurovision drinking game (wind machine –  drink! Mid-song costume change – drink!) and of course, ate delicious European dishes, which everyone brought a dish (or more!) of.

But for those of you confused each year by all the snark around the interwebs and filling up your Twitter feeds about #Eurovision, what the heck is it?

Who You Gonna Call? The Ghostbusters Trailer is Here!

There has been much discussion and speculation over the Ghostbusters sequel/reboot (seboot? requel?) since it – and its female x 4 lead cast – was first announced. Some have been all for it, while others around the interwebs have not been quite so keen on the casting.

Until now, there have only been a few film stills to tease the masses, but now, finally, we have a full trailer!
So what do you think? To me, it looks to pay just enough homage to its predecessors (with the style of the ghosts, the hearse, and the slime – gross, so gross), while also being current.

July can't come fast enough.
As a fan of paranormal investigation shows, I'm digging it. Plus I love Melissa McCarthy and Kristin Wigg so it seems someone in Hollywood decided to make a film just for me. You shouldn't have (but I'm so glad you did).

The Full Trailer for Finding Dory is Here!

The  full trailer for Pixar's Finding Dory, the long awaited and highly-anticipated sequel to everyone's favourite, Finding Nemo, is here!
The trailer aired exclusively on Ellen (Who is the voice of Dory, so of course it did!) and gave us big insights into the plot of the film and which of our fave characters will be back.

On a quest for her family (before she forgets again) it looks like Finding Dory is going to have a lot of heart, just like its predecessor. We can't wait until June! But in the meantime, we'll just keep swimming.

Happy Birthday Ron Weasley!

According to Wikipedia, today is Ron Weasley's birthday!

 (or yesterday, if you're Australian)

Happy 36th birthday, Ron! Wow, it's hard to believe, isn't it. The last we saw of Ron was in the flash-forward in both the book of JK Rowling's Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and onscreen (in Part II), age 36ish, as he saw his son off on his way to Hogwarts at Kings Cross Station's Platform 9 ¾.

But, though he's a dad by now and preparing with Hermione for their daughter Rose's own adventures to come at Hogwarts, we're not quite there yet.

For everyone wishing our favourite fictional redhead a happy birthday, Pottermore has outdone itself with a smashing infographic covering all things Ron.

Brings back memories, doesn't it. All you out there celebrating this most joyous of days – have a butterbeer for me!

What do you think 36-year-old dad Ron is like? Taking his son, Hugo on father-son bonding days to the Quidditch every weekend to see their team the Chuddley Cannons, I think. Or maybe Rose is the sporty one of the family. Let's discuss in the comments!

Lucky Londoners will get to find out for sure when the two-part play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child hits theatre! Just one theatre; The Palace, in July 2016.

Rihanna and Drake have released not one but two music videos from two different directors for their newest collaboration, Work. Each video and director appears to have chosen a very different aesthetic as you can see below (just keep watching after the first to find the second version). Perhaps the first caters more to what fans have come to expect from Rihanna, and the second, bearing a stylistic resemblance to the video to Drake's Hotline Bling, caters to the tastes of Drake fans.

The smooth Voice of God - Morgan Freeman is Now Available to Direct You Through Traffic

Freeman as God in 'Evan Almighty', Photo Credit: Universal
Morgan Freeman's voice is so smooth, so calming, that he has portrayed God in film not once, but twice. He even narrated the Tom Cruise-lead War of the Worlds, as an omniscient, all-knowing, body-less voice. That's rather God-like too, no?

We can think of no one more perfect to help us all navigate through unknown streets, terrain, and traffic, and to help us all keep our cool on the road.

And now he's doing it!
